Madurai Shri M.Venkatarama Iyer

At the outset, I wish you and your family warm greetings on the advent of New Year 2010. Wishing you continued success, health, happiness and prosperity to one and all.

It has been quite some time that I had put down pen to paper. While going through a file handed over to me by Shri C.R.Natarajan (Papa mama), I found a small pamphlet containing the below information. It is about one of our Ancestors titled
“ The life of the Honourable Mr. M.Venkatarama Iyer – B.A B.L”

I immediately thought that this should be put to the blog without wasting any further time. Thanks to Papa mama for preserving this pamphlet for well over 45 years and handing it over to me, else valuable information about this great person would have gone down the drain.

Shri M Venkatama Iyer was the son of Muthuswamy Iyer's. Muthuswamy Iyer was the man who is said to have been a tahsildar and was owner of vast stretches of land in Devadanappatti and a few other villages that were inherited. Muthuswamy Iyer's daughter, was Meenakshi and was married to Naganatha Sasthri of Tanjore (originally from Pudukkottai and son of Venku Iyer).

For continuity readers may refer to the below links
Mr. Venkatarama Iyer is the brother in law of Shri Thanjavur Naganatha Sastry . Thanjavur Shri P.V. Naganatha Sastry:

Plz also refer to the Madurai family link
http://snp-roots.blogspot.com/2008/08/madurai-muthuswamy-iyer-family.html

We read with awe and majesty, on how our pre-Independence leaders have fought for Social upliftment, Child Marriages abolition , establishment of homes for widows ,formation of Banks, being part of pre-Independence Shipping Company etc etc. How great it would be to know, there was one such great luminary in our own family fold. Read below article about a legal Luminary, who achieved all the above and much more within a life span of just 20 years, after he has been educated.

Background information:

A function has been organized on 8-11-1965 at ‘Victoria Edward Hall’ Madurai to celebrate the Centenary of Honorable Shri M. Venkatarama Iyer.
I’m reproducing the contents in the pamphlet printed as part of this occasion.

Received via mail from Shri C.R.Natarajan.

Shyam, that was very emotional for me. I have lived in Madurai in the home that was Late Venkatrama Iyer's My mother used to talk of her uncle and her grandfather Muthuswamy Iyer. One branch of the Venkatrama Iyer descendants is son V Muthuramalilnga Iyer, senior to late V Kameswara Iyer and V Subramania Iyer. Late Venkatrama Iyer's great grandsons Sri G V Ramakrishna distinguished himself in Govt. service and was in the Planning commission and also as Adviser to the Governor of Madras. His brother GV viswanathan is also IAS and was in the Karnataka cadre. They had one sister Sujatha, and her husband Balasubramaniam was in Air India. These three are descendants on the daughter's side. I forgfet the name of the daughter but she died young. Dr. TVV's wife Lalitha was her sister and there was another sister Susheela whose husband was Narayanan. He was a very friendly person. Lalitha Manni's brothers were Rajmani aka M Venkatraman, Sundaram and Dr. Ramachandran. Rajamani had two sons Mohan and Girish and one daughteer Sundanda. Gikrish is somewhere in US. Mohan lives in Chennai, a very nice person. Sundnda was married to Sundaram who was an officer in Grindlays, Mumbai. Sundaram was a fun loving person and we used to meet often. He died about ten years back. I believe he had dementia at a young age.Sundanda had two daughters one of whom lis married to 'TVS's great grandson, son of my class mate Vijayaraghavan. Viji is no more and Rathanak is also gone. The only person who is around in that group is Narayanan, grandson of TVS via his daughter.
I think I have G V Ramakrishna's e-maikl somewhere and will lsend your blog to him.
He was Addl. Secretary Industries, when George Fernandes, my mentor and friend was Minister for Induistries. These old wives" tales keep saved somewhere and some day will be useful in anotherl blog!

While searching I came upon this site. I was told by my father once that his grand father Shri.Meenakshi Sundaram was running or working for Madura Mail. I am trying to see a snap shot of the magazine.
My Great grand father Panayur Subbiyer made initial financial controbution for starting Sanskrit department in Madura College. He also contributed for the Meenakshi School which was the school for girls. He had contribution for conducting a 'Mandakapadi' during Meenakshi Kalyanam which was known as Panayur Subbaiyer Mandakapadi. My father's elder brother Mr.S.M.Sundram Iyer worked in Sethupathi School and subsequently became Head Master of M.C.School. He was known popularly as 'Karadi Vathiyar' I am very much moved by reading the old stories
